How to Connect ANY Domain to Squarespace (2025)
In 2025, setting up a custom domain on Squarespace is easier than ever. Whether you’re just getting started or need to connect a domain from another provider, this guide will walk you through both scenarios.
We’ll break it down into two parts: one for those who haven’t purchased a domain yet and another for those who already own a domain but want to connect it to their Squarespace website.
Let’s dive in!
Part 1: How to Connect a Domain You’re Buying Through Squarespace
If you haven’t bought a domain yet, the first thing you’ll need to do is purchase one directly through Squarespace. Here’s how:
Step 1: Open Your Squarespace Settings
On your Squarespace website, navigate to the Settings tab in the left menu.
If you can’t see the menu, click on the arrow in the top-right corner to expand it.
Scroll down to find Settings (the gear icon) at the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Go to Domains and Email Settings
In the settings menu, click on Domains & Email.
From the dropdown, click Domains to open the domain management options.
Step 3: Select "Get a Domain"
You will be given two options: Get a Domain or Use a Domain I Own.
Since you haven’t purchased a domain yet, go ahead and click Get a Domain.
Step 4: Choose Your Domain
Now, you’ll be prompted to search for the domain name you want. Remember, domain names are unique, so pick something original!
For example, let’s say you search for “domainsquarespacedemo.com”. If it’s available, you’ll see the price and an option to add it to your cart. The price is typically around $12 per year.
Step 5: Customize Your Purchase
You’ll also be given the option to choose the term length for your domain. By default, Squarespace will try to get you to pay for 3 years, but you can change this to 1 year if you prefer.
Once you’ve made your selections, click Save & Continue.
Step 6: Complete Your Purchase
Add your payment details, confirm your information, and click Buy.
Once your purchase is complete, the domain will automatically be set as the primary domain for your Squarespace website.
That’s it! Your new domain is now connected to your website.
Part 2: How to Connect a Domain You’ve Purchased From Another Provider
If you’ve already bought a domain from another provider, such as GoDaddy or Namecheap, don’t worry, you can still connect it to your Squarespace website. Here’s how:
Step 1: Access Domain Settings
From your Squarespace website, go back to the Settings tab.
Click on Domains & Email, then select Domains from the dropdown menu.
Step 2: Select "Use a Domain I Own"
This time, instead of choosing Get a Domain, you’ll select Use a Domain I Own.
Enter the domain you purchased from your other provider (e.g., "digitalgrowthclub.co.uk").
Step 3: Choose Between Transferring or Connecting
Squarespace will ask whether you want to Transfer or Connect your domain.
Transfer: This option moves your domain and its billing to Squarespace, so Squarespace will manage it going forward.
Connect: This option lets you keep your domain with your current provider but link it to your Squarespace site.
For most users, connecting the domain (rather than transferring) is the best choice. To do this, simply click Connect Domain.
Step 4: Select Your Domain Provider
If you’re using a major domain provider like GoDaddy, Squarespace will make it super easy to connect your domain automatically. Simply select your provider from the dropdown menu, enter your account details, and Squarespace will take care of the rest.
Step 5: For Other Providers, Manually Connect the Domain
If your domain provider isn’t on the list, you’ll need to connect the domain manually.
Click on Other from the dropdown, then click Connect Domain. You’ll be shown six DNS records that you’ll need to copy.
Step 6: Update DNS Records on Your Domain Provider’s Website
Log in to your domain provider’s website (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap).
Navigate to the DNS management page for your domain—this is usually labeled something like Manage DNS or DNS Settings.
Add new DNS records using the information you copied from Squarespace. Each record should be pasted exactly as shown in Squarespace.
After adding the records, refresh your DNS settings. If the connection was successful, the records will turn green, indicating that they’ve been properly configured.
Step 7: Confirm and Set as Primary
Once all six DNS records are connected, return to Squarespace, and it will confirm that the domain is successfully connected.
Your new domain will now appear in your list of connected domains, and if it’s the first domain you've added, it will automatically become your primary domain.
You’re All Set!
Congratulations, you’ve successfully connected your custom domain to your Squarespace website! Whether you purchased your domain directly through Squarespace or connected it from another provider, your site is now accessible via your personalised domain.
